Week 36 - coming together again

Monday 4 February

No builders here today, but uprights and brackets delivered for the adjustable shelving in the dining area.  This will go in the alcoves on either side of the chimney breast  to accommodate the bulk of my hardback books.  Order also placed for special fixings suitable for a solid wall covered with with "dot and dab" plasterboard...why they didn't just skim the good solid wall that was there already I don't know, but I'll have to live with it now.

I've ordered thick birch ply cut to size for the bookshelves themselves, which should be delivered in 3-5 working days.  That should give me just enough time to fix the shelves to the brackets, unpack the boxes of books and get them up on the shelves so the floor in the kitchen diner will be relatively clear by next Wednesday/Thursday when the floor finish is due to be laid.

I've also bought some bits and pieces to make a towel rail in the downstairs WC and put a rail in one of the utility storage cupboards where I can hang up indoor and outdoor brooms, the mop and other cleaning things.  Then that storage unit should be a bit better organised, rather than the jumbled mess it is now. But the pull out fitting in the other tall cupboard is doing a good job, accommodating all the household stuff like light bulbs and DIY things.

The floor fitter is popping in tomorrow morning to check the screed is OK to put down the floor finish - a layer of latex sub floor with tiles laid on top. I'm then working away from home for a couple of days and will put up the shelving fittings on Thursday, with the help of a friend.  The glass back splashes are due to be installed on Friday.  It's coming together again at last!

Tuesday 5 February

A quick last minute coat of paint of the alcoves in the dining area where the shelving is being put up on Thursday, as I'm working away from home from lunchtime today and this is my last chance.  The floor fitter dropped in - all looking good and ready to lay sub-floor of latex next Wednesday and the tiles on top on Thursday.

Thursday 6 February

With help from a friend, the Elfa adjustable shelving system is up in the alcoves, ready to take the plywood shelves when they arrive!

Friday 7 February

The smoke grey mirror glass splash backs have been installed.  Darker than I was expecting, but looking rather sophisticated!

"Dad" builder has been here filling holes and finishing bits of plastering that had been forgotten...Still need to be sanded down and yet more holes to be filled, but a bit more progress nonehtheless.

...he's also sorted out the spaghetti junction of pipes and hose under the sink so that there's room to install a 3 bin unit for food waster, recyclables and other waste, rehung the door to the cabinet in the downstairs loo so that its level and sorted out the one of the storage cupboard shelves so that I can now actually use it!

Saturday 8 February

The electrician has returned and installed the under cabinet lighting...

...and removed a redundant light switch which everyone had forgotten about.  Another hole to fill, but its getting there!

Next week the aim is to paint a bit more of the new kitchen diner, put the bookshelves in place, unpack the books and get them up on the shelves and watch the floor finish go down.  Whether it will happen in the right/logical order is another matter...Fingers crossed!
