week 18: a floor slab and roof lights!

Monday 1 - Wednesday 3 October

I was out of the house well before the builders arrived for the first three days of the week, so had to catch up with what had been going on when I returned home.

On Monday, they did some work on the extension roof.  It appears that the original timber work had not been fixed in quite the right place...but that has been put right now and the openings are now correctly spaced out and framed up ready to take the three Velux windows.

More work on the roof took place on Tuesday and straps were added to the extension's main external wall.

I arrived home early on Wednesday, just in time to catch the concrete truck clearing up.  That could only mean one thing!  The floor slab has been laid inside. The constructive (as opposed to destructive) phase of the build is progressing!

Thursday 4 October

The floor slab had dried out enough to walk on and work has re-started open the roof.  The outer framework for the Velux windows has gone in and a start has been made on the slate cladding!

Friday 5 - Saturday 6 October

Work continued on the roof and by Saturday, all three roof lights had been installed and one had been finished, just in time to afford some protection from the pouring rain...although drops are still coming through pending completion of the flashing.

Inside, the space is now appreciable!

And at long last, the skirting board and carpet has been refitted in my office/study and I've been able to start the process of cleaning up and moving stuff back into its proper place...

Over the weekend, the next valuation and invoice came in as expected.  I didn't open it straightway as I'd taken advantage of the good weather to get out of the house for a long walk.  When I did read the covering email it came as a bit of a surprise.  The man in charge thinks I've been unreasonable for withholding payment for works that have not been done, or only paying part of the full valuation for works had been started but not completed.

So Sunday evening was spent composing a suitable reply....
