I had hoped to spend the weekend visiting my daughter and her partner in London, enjoying a firework display and looking after the dog while they got on with some decorating in their new home...However, I abandoned those plans yesterday when it became clear that the guys would be working over the weekend to get everything ready for the floor fitter on Monday.
Good job I stayed at home. Before 9am, I'd already had one call from the builder about the dimensions of the platform on which the peninsular run of kitchen base units will sit. That took me over an hour to sort out as best I can, subject to confirmation from the kitchen supplier who will call me back.
Finished that job just in time to take an unexpected delivery, which turned out to be the tap for the new kitchen sink. I wasn't expecting that to arrive until 9 November, but I'm glad it's come early rather than late.
It's a very sleek, modern design, black finish with metallic details. Never thought I could get excited about a tap, but this looks lovely...
....and its very functional too, with a pull out nozzle which can spray or just be a straight water flow. My only concern is that there is a square hole in the packing case that's empty. I do hope that nothing's missing....
I've also had a chance to look at the stair nosing which was delivered yesterday. I'd been puzzled why there were two long tubes, when I only ordered one long 2.7m length. Now I know.
My original order was for a simple right angle nosing based on a photo on the suppliers website, but no drawing showing dimesnions. I ordered a sample to to be sure it was OK but ended up placing the order before the sample arrived, worried that if I delayed any longer it wouldn't be delivered in time to be fitted on Monday.
When the sample arrived the morning after I'd made the order, I realised that the profile of the nosing would be too small to cover the tile, ply subfloor and original floorboards. I'd phoned up the supplier right away to change the order for a nosing with a different profile which I knew would be the right size from the dimensions on the website, and paid the difference in price.
The revised order has obviously gone through, but without the original order being deleted and both have been delivered. I now have two lengths of stair nosings. I'll contact the supplier on Monday to ask what to do about returning the one that's not going to be used and make sure I haven't been charged twice.
The man in charge has sent the next invoice, but I had problems logging into online banking, so had to dash into town to transfer money from savings into the current account so that I would have enough to pay the bill once I'd checked it and re-registered for online banking.
By the time I returned home, I was expecting the guys to have left but approaching 6pm they were still there. They were working on drainage in the downstairs WC and connecting the electric cables in the new consumer unit under the stairs to the existing consumer unit in the front room, taking up the floor in the hall in the process (I nearly fell into the hole when I opened the front door) and upsetting my neighbours with the noise.
As the work necessary to lay the floor finish on Monday had been completed, I said it was time to stop and pack up for the weekend; they can do the rest on Monday, provided they don't get in the way of the floor fitter. Then I went to apologise profusely to my immediate neighbour and explained why they were working on a Saturday. He was very understanding in the circumstances...
The good news is that the platform which extends the kitchen area to take the peninsular run of base cabinets has been completed (together with its service duct beneath)...
...and the electricity and water supply for the dishwasher, water supply and drainage for the sink, and gas supply for the hob are all installed.
At long last, the gallows bracket to support the half landing and top of the stairs is in place and the post under the stairs has been removed. This will allow a much more generous way through to the lower dining level when the kitchen units are installed than would have otherwise been the case...
....and I can put a storage unit/sideboard/credenza (whatever you want to call it) directly under the stairs without a post getting in the way of opening doors and drawers.
There's a little bit of tidying up I want to do in this area before the floor fitter arrives on Monday, but this is is very visible progress, and there will be more progress very soon when the new floor is laid on this higher level kitchen area. Even the plaster is beginning to dry out in spite of there being no heat in the house, other than a small fan heater which currently follows me around like a little dog...
My eBay auction ends early on Sunday evening. There's already a bid on the old dishwasher so my mission for tomorrow is to clean it up ready for collection by the successful bidder. And to re-register for online banking so I can pay the next bill once I've checked it. But no builders in the house, so no alarm for a change. Bliss!
What a good job I didn't go to London this weekend as planned....
